Best translation for Joseph's "Happi, urepii, yoropikune"?

Postby Kira Kira » Sat Aug 15, 2015 11:31 am

I've seen various English sources translate the line Joseph says to Santana - "Happii, urepii, yoropikune (ハッピー うれピー よろピくね—)" - as "Happy, joy-py, nice to meetcha-py!"

Apparently, the line is meant to be Joseph childishly replacing the word 'ureshii (happy)' and 'yoroshikune (nice to meet you)' with 'pii' sounds, but I was wondering if there was a better translation that'd more accurately preserve the pun in English as well.

Buddywaters: "Happy, joy-py, nice to meetcha-py!"
Commie: "Happy, snappy, how trippy to meet you!"
GetBack: "Happy, glad-py, nice to py-tcha!"
MMM: "Happy, peppy, hello-py!"
Nutbladder: "Happy-happy-hi-diddley-do!"
Official: "Happy! Fun! Nice to meet you, man!"

Wordplay simple enough that none of these are really incorrect, it's just a matter of taste.

Thanks for the information. I knew that there wouldn't be a 1:1 translation between languages, since the original heavily relies on Japanese wordplay, but I actually didn't know about how GetBack and MMM adapted it.

If I was trying to actually adapt it moreso than translate it.... hmmm....

Maybe something like: "Happy! Joy-py-leased t' meetcha!"

I love how the dub pulled it off.
