Well idk how you ever thought that this series could become mainstream in any way. Even in Japan the entire series sold 100,000,000 volumes in 30 years, or about 850k copies a volumes in average.

You Americans should already be grateful to have anyone publishing any JJBA in your territory, it's a really unconventional series from a niche entertainment form in the USA and crippled by the numerous musical references. In a way it's the greatest success JJBA can achieve in the West.

And that is making it so success is defined by sales. JJBA being able to stay fresher than ever even after 30 years, having continuous publication for decades, bringing the attention of the Louvres, or having a small but really loyal fanbase are greater achievements imho.

Well, it's not a bad thing to want the series to succeed all the more in America, right?
"Being grateful" only goes so far when being passive at the idea that it's not doing as well as its potential could really do it justice for.

And we're back. In case anyone is wondering, the DBZ Kai marathon on New Years actually did worse than the JoJo marathon. This alleviates my worry from before and it's safe to now chalk up those extremely poor ratings due to falling on two major holidays.

Here are the ratings for January 7th (week of episode 11):

8:00p - Dragon Ball Super - 1,063,000 / 0.399 / *18-49 ratings not available*
11:30p - Dragon Ball Super - 1,369,000 / 0.651 / 835,000
12:00a - Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters - 1,124,000 / 0.515 / 641,000
12:30a - JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure - 900,000 / 0.439 / 563,000
1:00a - Gundam Unicorn Re:0096 - 747,000 / 0.353 / 453,000
1:30a - Hunter X Hunter - 679,000 / 0.303 / 389,000
2:00a - Naruto: Shippuden - 675,000 / 0.306 / 393,000
2:30a - One Piece - 554,000 / 0.25 / 328,000
3:00a - One Punch Man - 581,000 / 0.272 / 349,000

Super's premiere wasn't quite as big as I thought it'd be, but part of that may have been due to the actual premiere being at 8pm, which drew some viewership away from its Toonami premiere (though the Toonami timeslot did better, likely because 11:30 was the timeslot they advertised). JoJo's ratings were solid, and it held a good amount of the 18-49 target demo. It even made Saturday's top 100 cable ratings this week! Only downside for the block overall is that Gundam Unicorn's premiere lost a lot of viewers, but that seems par for the course with Gundam now.

>Second place in the ratings
>Being anything bad

You know, it's a pretty good rating, behind only Dragon Ball, which is, arguably, the well successful anime in the west. You literally won't get more because anime doesn't catch any more audiences like they did in the late 90's.

Actually believing that JoJo can do even better than this is the same shit as the guys that believe JoJo would sell incredibly well here in Brazil.

Well, my reason for concern is mainly that the majority of shows that have aired in the post-Dragon Ball slot in the past two years have had an average of at least 1 million viewers (and no 12:30am premieres had fallen below 1 million since Kill la KIll in mid 2015). That's the target I'd like to see the JoJo ratings get to consistently. I do agree that these are good ratings, and I'm well aware that there's a certain level that the block in general won't exceed, but it has been better so there is room for growth.

But it seems to have at least stabilized, which as I said previously, stability is an important factor as well. At the moment, the show that really seems to be in danger of getting thrown down the block is Gundam, which has been wildly inconsistent.

11:30 - Dragon Ball Super - 1,236,000 / 744,000
12:00a - Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters - 1,210,000 / 736,000
12:30a - JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure - 915,000 / 563,000
1:00a - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - 819,000 / 489,000
1:30a - Hunter X Hunter - 685,000 / 410,000
2:00a - Naruto: Shippuden - 654,000 / 406,000

3:00a - One-Punch Man - 614,000 / 417,000

January 21st (Week of episode 13)
11:30 - Dragon Ball Super - 1,041,000 / 588,000
12:00a - Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters - 925,000 / 550,000

2:00a - Naruto: Shippuden - 520,000 / 313,000
2:30a - One Piece - 450,000 / 274,000
3:00a - One-Punch Man - 498,000 / 310,000

January 28th (Week of episode 14)
11:30 - Dragon Ball Super - 1,158,000 / 702,000
12:00a - Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters - 1,028,000 / 634,000
12:30a - JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure - 866,000 / 487,000
1:00a - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - 797,000 / 457,000
1:30a - Hunter X Hunter - 779,000 / 442,000
2:00a - Naruto: Shippuden - 814,000 / 453,000
2:30a - One Piece - 627,000 / 376,000
3:00a - One-Punch Man - 671,000 / 416,000

February 4th (Week of episode 15)
11:30 - Dragon Ball Super - 1,282,000 / 782,000
12:00a - Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters - 1,130,000 / 672,000
12:30a - JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure - 790,000 / 482,000
1:00a - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - 775,000 / 468,000
1:30a - Hunter X Hunter - 733,000 / 433,000
2:00a - Naruto: Shippuden - 695,000 / 422,000
2:30a - One Piece - 597,000 / 375,000
3:00a - Ghost in the Shell - 501,000 / 319,000

So, unfortunately, it doesn't look like the premiere and hype of Dragon Ball Super had much, if any, effect on getting people to check out JoJo. Or, rather, people did check it out (ratings were up initially), but by this past Saturday, that trickle-down effect looks to have worn off and we're back to where we were before. Losing 30% of the audience is a pretty significant blow.

I hate to continue to be a doom-sayer, which is why I'll keep these ratings updates to a monthly basis so I don't risk repeating myself every week, but the likelihood of Stardust Crusaders airing is beginning to look worrisome.

If anything, I DO have a feeling that the ratings might go up during Joseph vs Wamuu.
If not, the ol' "For some absolutely inexplicable reason, the final episode of the season has a massive spike in ratings".

Edit on 3/11/17:
It was announced yesterday that One Piece will be pulled from Toonami after the 18th and replaced by Tokyo Ghoul (with a confirmed shift in the block, as Tokyo Ghoul won't be airing at 2:30am). Normally I would refrain from mentioning non-JoJo changes, to keep it on-topic, but this could be good news and bad news for JoJo.
The good news is that, after several months of the block having nothing but long-runners, a slot is now free for shorter shows. Prior to this, it was more likely JoJo would be the one taken off to make room (since they already sound committed to airing IBO season 2 after Unicorn), but now they may be more lenient and keep JoJo around.
The bad news is that JoJo will most likely be moved down beginning March 25th to accommodate for Tokyo Ghoul. I am hoping that it just gets bumped down one slot to 1am, but we'll see. I'll post an update once the new timeslot is confirmed.

Viz Media will be having a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure panel at Anime Boston this upcoming Friday with a "sneak peek", as well as a "special premiere" screening on Sunday.

So we're most likely finally getting news about the release of the Stardust Crusaders dub, including if/when it'll air on Toonami.

Update with no news, bad news, and (possible) good news.

No news: The JoJo panel at Anime Boston didn't mention the Stardust Crusaders dub (though Parts 1 and 2 will be released on Blu-Ray sometime this summer).

Bad news: Attack on Titan Season 2 will be airing on Toonami starting April 29th. Battle Tendency ends the week before, so JoJo will be pulled off of Adult Swim once Part 2 ends.

Potentially good news: I sent a question to Jason DeMarco (head of Toonami) regarding the above, and received an answer.

So with Attack on Titan Season 2 replacing JoJo on April 29th, does this mean JoJo is done on Toonami? Or is there a chance Stardust Crusaders will air in the future?
AoT2 will replace JoJos and we hope to run Stardust Crusaders at some point soon. We love JoJo.

So it will be taking a break between seasons at the very least.

JoJo becoming a Toonami regular like DBS/DBZ and Naruto would be a dream come true, even if it's realistically moved back a slot with each season.

Chris Sabat recently said he would like to voice Okuyasu in the Part 4 dub. Do you guys think he would do the character justice?

I think he would. Every time I try to imagine Okuyasu with an English voice, it's either his actual Japanese voice speaking fluent English (which of course is too good to be true), or the Muscle Man/Kuwabara voice since I haven't gotten out of my head the idea of Josuke and Okuyasu being Urameshi and Kuwabara.

Even just plugging in Vegeta's voice makes Okuyasu sound better than my headcanon of it.

Edit: Wait a minute... would he try for an Okuyasu original voice or literally resort to Muscle Man/Kuwabara?

2:00a - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - 548,000 / 352,000
2:30a - Naruto: Shippuden - 583,000 / 359,000
3:00a - Ghost in the Shell - 492,000 / 326,000

So the first week of the new season of Samurai Jack didn't exactly provide strong numbers for JoJo, but the numbers gradually rose over the following two weeks. Unfortunately, that momentum was stopped this past Saturday, though the culprit for what happened is less speculation and more fact; Adult Swim did an April Fools prank earlier that evening where they did an unannounced premiere of Rick & Morty season 3's first episode, and ran it on a loop for four hours, preempting Samurai Jack and Dragon Ball Super (which understandably pissed off a lot of people). This may have gotten awareness back up for Rick & Morty after being on hiatus for a year and a half, but it negatively impacted the whole night and nothing, Toonami or otherwise, broke a million viewers.

Two weeks left to go.

This is the entire reason why I was excited for it to be on Toonami in the first place.
