The Book - JBA 4th Another Day Translation: Done! 8/7/2017

Postby Kewl0210 » Mon Nov 07, 2011 1:57 am

Hey everz'ns. I decided to start translating this huge book for fun when I feel like it.
For those unfamiliar, "The Book - Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 4th Another Day" was published July 30th 2007. authored by Otsu Ichi, and there are a few illustrations by Hirohiko Araki. Recently they're coming out with a couple more novels, the "VS JOJO" series they're calling it, though the books are largely unrelated. One about Purple Haze called "Hajishirazu no Purple Haze - Purple Haze Feedback", one about Dio called "OVER HEAVEN", and one called "Jorge Joestar" which is the result of a crazy man on powerful hallucinogenic drugs making a Jojo plot. Also, before all these, there were two novels that were written more traditionally like they do for most series, where they're just simple quick side-stories with a bunch of illustrations. One for part 3 which is just called "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" and one for part 5 which is called "GioGio's Bizarre Adventure 2: Golden Heart, Golden Ring". So I thought I'd start with this one first, because it was the first really good one.

Otsuichi (It's usually written as one word like that) is known as a horror author whose works have been made into manga and films.
This is an entry wikipedia has about this book:
"In 2000, it was announced that Otsu-ichi would be writing a novel set during the fourth arc of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The novel proved difficult to complete; in Kono Mystery ga Sugoi 2004, Otsu-ichi claimed to have written over 2000 pages, but thrown them all out. Intent on writing a novel that lived up to the manga, it took him until 2007 to complete it."

It's all text, so I figured I'd just post it here and update this post when I add stuff to it. (It's hosted on an external site because I ran out of max-characters in this post.)
I'll write any notes in brackets. Please do not tell me if I have any typos or anything, I don't really care. If it disturbs you that much, read it in Japanese. With the sheer amount of text it's impossible to do it all without any mistakes. Maybe if I finish, I'll go over it all or see if I can get someone to proofread.
It's my first novel I'm translating so I'll do my best to maintain the flow and feeling of the original wording despite the differences between the languages without trying to make everything sound forced to make sure the reader understands everything (Because that would make it clearer, but would lower the quality of the writing).
As of now, I haven't read the whole thing yet. I generally read about a chapter more than have translated so far, but it varies somewhat (If I do finish, I'll update this). But I'm not gonna be translating this as I read it or anything, and I'm more ore less just working on this whenever I feel like it. Also, earlier parts are subject to change if things become clearer later on and a better way to translate things becomes apparent.
Please note that the book is 380 pages long, so do not expect me to ever ever finish it. (Or, until I get close to finishing it, then you can expect me to finish it.) That way you can't be disappointed.

If anybody wants to credit a group for this, credit my scanlation group Hi Wa Mata Noboru. I might release it as a .pdf on my group's page when it's 100% done.

I decided, since there's a limit to how much text you can put in a post, to stop posting it on the forum as actual posts and I'm just going leave it as just this link to the .txt.
This .txt is on a site for direct downloads hosted by somebody on my group's distro team.
This folder also has a folder of all of the images:
http://kappashiro.com/hiwamatanoboru/Th ... her%20Day/
Here's a direct link to the .txt:
http://kappashiro.com/hiwamatanoboru/Th ... %20Day.txt

The .txt is the thing I'm updating every time I translate any, so that has the most story and it's the most up to date. As I do chapters I'll make .pdfs which have all of the images in-line and make everything look all nice.

I found this interesting, there's a video doujinshi sort of thing someone has been making of this book.
Here's the Niconico Video link:
http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/27778746
Here's a mirror someone made on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... ature=plcp

Okay, so I'm going to post .pdfs of the individual chapters as I do them, with all the illustrations placed in the right spots and such. They'll be posted here as they're done. Though the .txt document will be the most up-to-date document ending wherever I leave off mid-chapter. And like I said, these chapters are still subject to change, and I might get someone to help me edit the whole thing once I finish.

Edit on 12/28/2014:
Ok, I'm gonna be starting on this again after doing other things for 2 years.
I finished Over Heaven which can be read here:
http://hiwamatanoboru.com/2014/02/27/jo ... er-heaven/
Also Buddy Waters has finished Shameless Purple Haze/Hajishirazu Purple Haze/Purple Haze Feedback which can be read here:
http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=489811
He's also working on translating Jorge Joestar using the scans of the text I gave him. He's been doing it for around a year now, but he's also translating the Stardust Crusaders anime so it may take a while. I'm gonna try to get through the rest of this book in the near future. It's one project that's been hanging over my head forever, you can tell by the text above and how old it is. I started this in late 2011 saying "I may not ever finish it" and now I'm setting out to finish it by doing the last 249 pages out of 380. I still can only devote time to this when I don't have other obligations to handle, but I'll try to update it on a semi-regular basis.

I'll just make a list which pages I've finished translating on certain dates in the updates it's a lot easier.

Here's a table of contents I made that includes the sub-chapters:
Prologue (p5-7)
Chapter 1 [1] (p9-16)
Chapter 1 [2] (p17-25)

I added a little more and fixed a couple things. The author's name is Otsu Ichi. The weird looking Z is actually the kanji 乙 which is "Otsu".
Also I translated like a paragraph more. I'd prefer to update this with entire scenes (the smaller things within chapters) but I'm in the midst of preparing for finals and working on final projects in school, and something like this is time consuming, even if it's pretty fun to do. I also put up a .txt of this, because this forum's crappy software erases all indents, so there are no paragraphs. So you can read that if you want it to look formatted right.

Ahhh~ I remember reading the Rohan-Kouichi exchange and having to suppress the urge to laugh like no one's business. ;D Too bad the next chapter is more... ambiguous? I for one found it more difficult to understand, anyway.

Kewl, although my skills are (in my opinion) meager in comparison to some of the other translators around and about the community, I have a copy of the novel myself, and was considering translating it for others' benefit at some point in time. Maybe I can be of some assistance in your efforts? (Not now, obviously, but perhaps in the future?)

Well, I was just gonna do it on my own for now. I'm not great at gauging people's skill levels, but novels are really damn hard and take a lotta work. So I'm going for accuracy and making it read in a smooth way, which takes a lot of experience translating to know what valid alternatives to various definitions and phrasing choices are.
I'm gonna take some time to work on this a bit... It's fun because I can really stop at any random place and people can read it.

Ok, so I added some more. I did the 2nd scene (I dunno what the hell you call them so I'm just gonna call them scenes. Subchapters? Something like that. If anyone has a better word, let me know.) And a little of the beginning of the 3rd. That 2nd one was pretty long. I'm on page 26 now. (The .txt is updated too. It's probably a lot more comfortable to read it in that format because I can indent the paragraphs.) Once my finals are over I'll probably have time to work on this more.

I added scene 3 of chapter 1 and the first couple paragraphs of scene 4.
As I have learned from reading scene 4, Chiho is a girl. So I changed all the "he"'s to "she"'s in the prologue.
I'm up to page, uh, 31 now.
I have to remember to at some point scan all the images. Maybe I'll scan them all then post them as I get to them in the translation or something.
Also, I wanted to add a thing to the title of the thread so people could tell what I was up to, but there's a REALLY small limit on the length of a topic title, so I had to take out the word "Project" and didn't have enough room for a space after the -.

Anyhow, enjoy that. This is fun. Scene 4 is long so I dunno if I'll do it all at once.

Haha that sounds really annoying! I guess it's true that English needs more gender-neutral pronouns... Keep at it!

I scanned all the pictures in the book and I also did the first half of scene 4 of chapter 1. I was gonna do the whole thing but it got too late. I'm gonna try to do a lot more of this soon. It's a fun thing to do to take a break from writing translation scripts for stuff and things like that.
I'm gonna put all the in-context pictures there and post the chapter-starter pictures as pages. You can't put pictures in a .txt so I just put all the pictures in a directory so you can download them. Once I finish the book I'll make a .zip with all of it or something.

I put up some more of scene 4 of ch. 1. I forgot how long it was, and kept getting distracted. I'm only at about half way now, I think. It's hard to go from a non-digital book, hold it open, and translate exactly from it, so even though I've read way past there by this point it's still hard to get this all exact.
I'll try to do the rest in the next day or so.

Oook, finished scene 4 of chapter 1. That was a loooot longer than I remembered it. That was page 31 to page 50, so 20 pages long.
I've gotta take a break now to work on other stuff. I'll come back to this in a week or so.

Also, it would seem that there's a character limit of 60,000 characters per post on this forum, so I can't keep posting it in the first post. Just use the .txt link.

I'll uhh... put URLS for where the pictures are I guess. Or download it and turn word-wrap on notepad. Or stick it in your Kindle-pod on your iReadBooks app.
It'd be nice if an admin or somebody could change the character limit to be... like 10 times that and I'll have enough to finish the book. That and allow me to indent. And it'll look nice in the first post there.

Scene 5 is pages 51-67, so it's 17 pages. Scene 6 is 68-79, so 12 pages. Scene 7 is 81-90, so 11 pages. And that's the end of chapter 1.
Read what I got so far. It's a lot easier than reading the whole thing at the end. Because that'd take a long time, plus it's gonna take forever to finish. hope you guys enjoy. The plot's starting to get going. The next scene is a Takuma's origin story.
